South Africa’s telecommunications industry has undergone significant transformations in recent years, transformations driven by technological advancements, regulatory changes and continuously evolving consumer demands. These changes range from the expansion of broadband infrastructure to the emergence of new players within the telecoms market. This article discusses several key developments that are shaping SA’s telecoms industry today.

With the increasing adoption of smartphones and the demand for high-speed internet connectivity rising, mobile data consumption has been skyrocketing. According to Kemp (2024), the quantity of mobile connections within South Africa grew by 4.2 million from January 2023 to January 2024.
This surge in mobile usage, specifically mobile data usage has led to telecoms service providers increasing their investment in their network infrastructure.
